Abby had her first session with Miss Mary after we had ours. We put the earphones in her ears so she would have as much privacy as she could on a virtual session. We understand the importance of confidentiality, but we would would LOVE to be able to be a fly on the wall and hear what they discuss.
Mark and I watched TV in the other room while she met with Miss Mary in our dining room. We heard a few things that were obvious that Miss Mary was getting to know Abby. We heard her favorite food, color, and they talked about what her summer has consisted of thus far. Then we heard the words “I don’t want to talk about that”. The tone in her voice made us believe that Mary hit a nerve. What did she ask? Why was Abby so serious when she said that. My heart sunk not knowing how to react. Not knowing how Abby would feel after this session.
As the meeting progressed we heard her describe a memory to Miss Mary. “I just want someone to tell me why my daddy went to jail. He left and didn’t come back. He always hurt my mommy too” Gosh. How does she remember something from when she was 2.5?! Why hasn’t she asked us that? I’m so glad we gave Abby someone she can confide in. I’m also thankful that I realize this counseling will also help open communication between us and Abby. I pray that she understands we are here for her…She can tell us anything! It just hurt my heart hearing her say those words. Knowing that it must be eating her inside to process those thoughts. Why her daddy left that night of the removal and she never saw him again? Why did her daddy beat her mommy? ugh…
