Now that Chloe has reached the age of 4 she will be moving into a new classroom for VPK. Surely since it has been awhile after the adoption, her insecurities would be gone… WRONG!
Soon after I left her for the day, I get a phone call from the teacher. Chloe is uncontrollable crying, biting, etc. She is visibly upset, and they have tried every trick in the book. I drive the two streets over to the daycare and walk into the classroom. Chloe immediately runs to me and clinches to my leg as though someone was trying to rip her away from me. I console her and try to calm her down without avail. I walked her to her previous teacher and she begins to calm down. I sat with her at the table and talked with her for a few minutes. I explained being a big girl meant she got to be in the big girl class. She didn’t seem to care about any form of explanation, she wanted to stay in her previous classroom forever. I asked her previous teacher to walk with us to the new one. Seems silly, but she played along. We all walked over to the classroom next door and comforted her as she looked at the toys, children, and took everything in. I guess to her, it was just overwhelming and a new territory. I handed her my hair tie from my wrist and asked her to keep it safe for me. I told her I would come back for it later and to pick her up (she was also afraid I wouldn’t come back). She gladly took the hair tie and promised to keep it safe for me.
I came back later that afternoon and her spirits seemed to be much better. The teacher told me she did well after I came earlier. She protected the hair tie and made sure “she kept it safe for mommy”. Phew, it worked!
