Not being married, changing names is a new territory for me… and I get to do it for TWO people! I arrive to the social security office, which if you thought Walmart had interesting people you should go to this place! Let’s just say the hour wait was quite entertaining.
You may be wondering why it took me a few months to get to the name changing phase… well you have to wait for the new birth certificate. Those of you who have adopted will probably agree with me that the new birth certificate is WILD! The new certificate has the biological parents’ names wiped out and mine was inserted in it’s place. So, reading the birth certificate it looks like I gave birth to both children. It’s bizarre I tell ya. I guess in my mind I envisioned my name to be added below their mother’s or something.
I finally have my number called and arrive to the window assigned. The lady takes my documents and realizes it was an adoption. Her emotionless face immediately lit up with happiness. She asked about the girls, how they were doing, and how long the process took. I showed her a few photos and I could tell her heart was happy. I am sure working for this place is typically full of complaints and my situation was a happy occasion for once. She quickly changed everything in the system and explained their names would be changed overnight. WOW, that quick huh? It’s just mind boggling that their identity and birth certificates are all changed within a week’s time… as if their past never existed.
Next steps will be changing their name with each medical specialist, primary physicians, daycare, and other places I may be forgetting. Fun times!
